Disgraceful exit alleged

PLEASING to see players in the south-west associations are graceful when sent back to the shed. It wasn't the case in Geelong Cricket Association (GCA) on the weekend as a wicketkeeper was allegedly hit with a bat.

The Geelong Advertiser reported the division four Torquay glovesman - who was not wearing a helmet - was celebrating the wicket of North Shore batsman Leigh McAuliffe. "All of a sudden, as he was walking off, this (batsman) swung his cricket bat right at me from behind and hit me on the top of the back of the head. There was a loud clunk... and then he's grabbed me around the throat and wanted to keep (fighting)," keeper David Muir said. McAuliffe claimed there was nothing in it. "He never got hit with a cricket bat. I raised the bat after being accused of being a heroin addict," he said. No charges have been laid.

IF you hear someone ask "where's your duck?", then see someone dash to their car to return with a toy duck, you've stumbled across a couple of Ecklin Cricket Club social members. The club has a duck system, where players who fail to score a run in the weekend's match are given a toy duck. "We have a social membership at our club and have at least 40 members," Ecklin's Kevin Wines explained. "If any one of them see the guys who made a duck during the week and ask "where's your duck?" and they don't provide it within a minute, it costs them a dollar fine." The club had a bus trip on the weekend, with one unlucky player's duck slipping out of his pocket before hopping back on the bus. Teammates who witnessed it neglected to tell him, then cheekily got back on the bus and asked him where his duck was. He ended up with an $11 fine. The money goes to the club's end of season function. If no one makes a duck this weekend, the four players have to keep their toy birds.

JASON Mungean ensured Warrnambool and District Cricket Association had a lively bus trip home from the Twenty20 Festival of Cricket rather than a depressing one. After cruising through the minor rounds, WDCA needed 30 runs off 16 balls to avoid a choke in the grand final against Hamilton. Mungean said he was yet to be put in a pressure situation like Sunday's this season. "I just wanted to make sure I hit the ball," he said. He and teenager Matt Brophy started to gain momentum, not that it calmed Mungean. "Anything can happen in Twenty20," he said. What happened is the pair continued the momentum, with Brophy's clever hitting and Mungean's hard-hitting - which included three sixes - steering WDCA to victory. Mungean said he never planned to leave Nirranda once it was dropped from division one before 2009-10. "I wanted to stay and hopefully get a successful side so we could push back to division one again," he said. Due to injuries and unavailability, his vision doesn't look likely as the Knights (1-4) are second-to-bottom on the ladder.

THE MCG awaits an Emmanuel College girls' team which won its way through to the state super 8s grand final on December 15. The girls will clash against Santa Maria College in the title match. East Warrnambool Primary School has also booked an appointment on the hallowed turf after winning the regional Kanga 8s finals in Hamilton. East progressed to the state finals at the MCG on December 8.

BRAUER College's year 10 side rose at 4am last Wednesday to make its way to Croydon for the state schools final. The boys' team didn't claim the title, losing by only 25 runs - a fair effort after their travel commitment.
