A shattering Twenty20 experience

TERRY Beks thought he found the safest car park at Dennington Recreation Reserve. The Dogs veteran has parked his car in the same spot for 20 years and never been a victim of a monster shot. But that changed on Sunday in the Twenty20 Cup quarter-final between Swifts/Great Western and Portland Tigers. The Combine's Gary Ranton belted a ball, with it landing smack bang onto Beks' Solomons Flooring station wagon. The evidence was captured by Peter Morganti, of Morg's Sportz Photography. "There were half a dozen of us standing about four metres away and we weren't watching it until it came down in the last second," Beks said. "You knew by the noise what had happened. Someone said I should park in a different spot but I've parked there for 20 years and never got hit until now. I'll keep parking there." It caps off an unlucky week for the Beks brothers. "The funny thing is my brother Leon had the same thing happen out at Purnim at training this week," Terry said.

LAST week's WDCA highlights were provided by the young and the old. While veteran Bill Primmer's century steered Allansford to victory, 17-year-old Tom Bowman claimed his first hat-trick with all lbws. The wickets helped Wesley CBC defeat Russells Creek. "They were all pretty much full tosses," Tom recalled. "I got one wicket, then it was the next over so I didn't really remember (I was on a hat-trick). Once I got the two in-a-row, everyone was just going crazy. I almost got a hat-trick at Country Week so it was good to get one on the weekend."

NESTLES is comfortably leading the Warrnambool and District Cricket Association club championship. The Factory sits 156.75 points clear of Dennington (827.25) while Wesley CBC (808.50), Allansford (797.60) and West Warrnambool (722.25) round out the top-five.

WESTERN Waves regional manager Stephen Field was proud of the region's under 18 girls who failed to claim back-to-back state titles on Monday after losing off the last ball of the match. "For the six girls who have another season at this age group, they will be encouraged to go one step further next season and all the team, the coaches and scorer Shae Johnson can be justifiably proud of their campaign finishing second and knowing that they have achieved what most sports people only dream of, playing on the MCG," he said. "The only shame is that not every Western Waves player and every potential Western Waves player could not have been at the MCG as the motivation gained from being part of such a professionally run day with the arena and electric scoreboard could only have motivated others to try to emulate what these girls had done."
