SHE was the voice of Cobden Football Netball Club for more than three decades.
The loud, screeching war cries from the outer were a trademark feature of every match she attended.
At Cobden's round eight Hampden league encounter with Port Fairy on the weekend, Colleen Sullivan was be remembered in the silence.
Her death on Tuesday after a long illness will be deeply felt in Cobden's playing ranks and among its staunch supporters, while the league has also lost one of its most distinctive characters.
Like many other spectators who occasionally stood too close to the source, I'd been known to wince when Colleen let fly on match days. But I know Cobden matches will never be the same without her.
THE South West District Football Netball League entered foreign territory on the weekend for an interleague challenge.
It travelled to Hatherleigh, near Millicent, to play two football and four netball matches against the Mid South East Football League.
SWDFNL media officer Bobby Chandler said it was the first time the league had played against MSEFL.
"We hope to make this an annual event,'' Chandler said.
"Next year we play them over here.''
The leagues will field under 13, 15, 17 and senior netball teams, under 19 and senior football sides.
THE development of young Warrnambool midfielder Tim Hunt reached another level with Collingwood's VFL team in round eight competition.
Hunt kicked three goals and was named the Magpies' best player in a 16.8 (104) to 7.12 (54) victory against the Northern Bullants at Princes Park.
For an unlisted player hopeful of making a minor impression with the Carringbush this season, Hunt will soon find himself talking with Collingwood's recruiting staff about 2010 rookie options.
DENNINGTON can thank quick-thinking committee member Sue Doukas for a fund-raising opportunity with the potential to net the club $5000.
Doukas, who works at Coles' Centro North Point store, successfully nominated the Dogs for a community program which involves something for both parties.
Club supporters who submit a specially-marked coupon with a purchase of $100 or more at the Coles store earn Dennington a $10 donation.
DFNC secretary Tony Pola said the store had forwarded 500 coupons to the club, which members and fans would be asked to use with purchases.
Pola praised the quick actions of Doukas, which he said came at a time when it was tough to find sponsorship.
JOEL Selwood's reputation as a hard-headed player has been enhanced by an accidental collision with Geelong teammate Max Rooke, also regarded as one of the AFL's tough nuts.
The pair clashed heads during the third quarter of last Saturday's game against Essendon. Selwood waved away trainers and raced off to the next contest while Rooke was assisted from the field by trainers.
VERSATILE Terang Mortlake sports trainer Rebecca Lourey can attend to more than a corked thigh or tight hamstring, as our photographer Damian White observed last Saturday at Victoria Park, Koroit.
Lourey took matters into her own hands when a ground invader threatened to disrupt play in the final quarter. Her decisive action attracted appreciation from at least one spectator.
HAMPDEN Football Netball League officials will be gnashing their teeth over the likely impact on grand final attendances but on mid-season form we are heading for the same clubs represented in the senior football and netball matches on September 19 at Reid Oval.
Koroit and Terang Mortlake sit one-two on the senior football and A grade netball ladders after the first full round of home-and-away matches. Last season it was Terang Mortlake and Warrnambool which played off at open level in both codes.
IF injured Koroit key position player Andrew Foster is missing the action too much he can always indulge in some fantasy football. The problem is, he will have to search out second-tier competitions in Western Australia as his Fremantle Dockers namesake Andrew Foster has been limited to one game this season at AFL level.
