 Three times a premiership

Three times a premiership

THE number three has a strong association with tomorrow's Warrnambool and District league senior grand final.

No matter what the result of the season-decider, something will be etched into the history books.

Favourite Merrivale is aiming for a rarity in any sport - the magical three-peat.

It would be history-making for the club as it would mark the first time the Tigers have won three flags in a row.

It would be history-equalling for the league, with Old Collegians the only other club to claim a hat-trick of premierships, which it did from 2004-2006.

If the undefeated black-and-gold was to get up, it would be only the third club in history to earn the tag of premier and champion.

East Warrnambool is searching for its first-ever premiership.

The Bombers have played the Tigers twice this season, going down by five goals in round eight and seven goals in the second semi-final.

Coach Katie Burt will be hoping it's 'third time lucky' rather than 'bad things happen in threes'.

TIMBOON Demons will be the best represented club on the court tomorrow.

The red-and-blue has four teams - 15 and under, 17 and under, B grade and A reserve - in grand finals.

Seven clubs have a side to support tomorrow. Those who don't need to bother bringing streamers to the courts are South Rovers, Kolora-Noorat, Old Collegians, Allansford and Deakin University.

The Cats and Sharks are the only two clubs without a grand final side in either netball or football.

WHILE tanking was all the talk as the AFL season drew to a close, when it comes to south-west netball, stacking is a word often thrown around. Ultimately, you play sport to win premierships.

Some clubs are willing to do anything to do that, which was proved during the season.

There has been at least one club which has played prominent senior players in a lower-ranked grade, rather than draw on their juniors, just to increase its chances of making finals.

Now the finals are upon us, stacking is still alive and well, proved by a text message to The Standard earlier this week.

It's unfortunate that after training and playing with a side all year, kids have to sit off in a final and watch a girl from a younger grade take what should be their place on court.

KOROIT is unsure if it will be overflowing with options in the goal circle in its second semi-final against Warrnambool tomorrow.

Shooter Kate Sewell was undergoing a fitness test at training last night to see if she had recovered from a calf injury, which has caused her to miss the last five matches.

If she comes good, Koroit can mix it up in the circle, with Sewell, Sarah Hearn, Emily Batt and Carley Thomas all capable shooters.

The Blues can also rotate in the ring, with goal attack Amy Wormald able to effectively combine with fellow teenagers Danielle McLeod and Darcy Saunders.

Saints coach Kate Foster said her girls were keen to play after having the week off.

"We know it's going to be a difficult match though, as Warrnambool proved in the last round,'' Foster said.

CONGRATULATI ONS to Ellen Lyne, who could possibly celebrate her 50th match for the Timboon Demons in the best way imaginable.

Her B grade side has qualified for tomorrow's grand final.

It is aiming to snap East Warrnambool's undefeated streak.

Teammate Joanne Delaney is also gearing up for a milestone.

She will be playing her 200th match with the Demons tomorrow.
