Old deeds catch up

DEE Jaynes was slightly surprised about the hype surrounding her leading up to this season.

The East Warrnambool netballer has deserved the extra attention, which has stemmed from people learning she is a previous member of an Australian squad.

But the confusing part for the Bomber was why she was being talked about at the start of 2009.

"I played for East last year,'' she said. "I guess it's just because we have a different side this year.''

After Jaynes lived in Bendigo and played for Eaglehawk, she had an eight-year break from netball.

She decided to pull on the bodysuit last year because her daughters, Rachel and Sarah, were playing for the Bombers.

The 41-year-old is likely to occupy the goal ring with new coach Katie Burt this season, with the pair combining effectively in their 64-14 round one win against Old Collegians.

While she can swing into defence, shooting has always been Jaynes' forte.

She was picked in the national squad in 1991 as a goaler.

"Back when I played for the Victorian representative team, they selected an Australian squad of 20 from the national competition,'' she said.

"I didn't make the team. It was very hard to crack into.

"It was Vicki Wilson and that mob.''

Despite 17 years passing since her national selection, Jaynes has still got it, with her athleticism a stand-out while her knowledge of the game is obvious. "The whole club is pretty excited about this year,'' she said. "We're really looking at East as a family club.''

SH IFTING the senior netball to 12.40pm has proved to be a winning move - at least for Dennington's senior footballers. With the A grade girls finishing before the boys ran out onto the ground, they were able to plonk themselves on the fence just after quarter time. It was then when both the Dogs started to stage their 33-point comeback and the volume of the noise from the crowd near the clubrooms was turned up.

SOUTH Rovers' netball delegate Ros Turner was pleased to announce one of the Lions 17 and under players escaped serious injury last Saturday. The junior tripped over in the round one clash against Russells Creek, with her head smashing against the asphalt. The incident resulted in a trip to the hospital. Fortunately the teenager is only nursing some extensive bruising. She is expected to be back playing within a month.
