Netball on the mind, even when bound for L.A.

Netball on the mind, even when bound for L.A.

WHEN you're about to live it up in L.A, who would be thinking about netball? Jacqui Gore would. When The Standard called the Allansford A grade coach last Sunday morning to talk about the Cats clawing their way to a four-goal victory against Panmure, she explained she was on holidays. Despite not seeing last Saturday's match and despite being about to board a plane to L.A, she was more than happy to engage in a quick chat about her side. "It was such a good win," she said. "I've got messages from all the girls. I'm away for three weeks so I'll miss South Rovers and Timboon (Demons) as well." Gore hoped she would receive some pleasant text messages after the next two testing matches before she lands back in Australia to take charge of the Cats against Dennington.

UNFORTUNATELY it was a case of deja vu for several players who represented Hampden League at the LOUD Championships at the State Netball Hockey Centre last Sunday. According to 13 and under coach Jackie Smedts, the outdoor courts were extremely slippery - similar to when the North Warrnambool Eagles' and South Warrnambool's courts had Plexipave installed. "Girls were going down left, right and centre," Smedts said. "My girls are very physical and hard at it, so they had to completely change their game."

NORTH Warrnambool Eagles fans were quick to point out that a name was missing from the panel which accompanied the story in Saturday's paper about Emma Cook's 250th senior match. Hampden League stalwart and Eagles' senior co-coach Angela Jellie has also impressively reached the milestone, as has Ellen Darcy, from Cobden. Insufficient information was supplied to The Standard. While former Australian representative Darcy has hung up the bodysuit, Jellie will be adding to her games tally on Saturday when North clash with her former side Cobden in A1 action. Another netballer will join the elite 250 senior game club on Saturday, with Koroit's Stacey O'Sullivan to celebrate the milestone.

KOROIT and Warrnambool's senior netball rivalry is arguably the most intense in the league. Let's add another dimension to it by seeing if the Saints can match the Blues when it comes to recognising O'Sullivan's achievement. Last week Warrnambool and South Warrnambool junior and senior netballers created a guard of honour for Cook, who then proceeded to burst her way through a mini banner created by the club.

WANTING to perform extra well against your former side is understandable and perhaps a contributor for South's three best players against Warrnambool last Saturday. Former Blues premiership players Holly Greene, Meleita Finnigan and Emily-Rose Finnigan were best for the Roosters. Despite the trio's best individual efforts, they would have preferred the team victory, which South was unable to record as it went down by 18 goals.

WARRNAMBOOL City Netball Association held the last of its junior grand finals on Wednesday night, with the match a one-sided affair. The 13 and under B final saw Net Stars defeat Woodford Wallabies 22-6, with best on court going to Shanae Tobin-Salzman. Best on court in Tuesday night's grand finals were Caitlin MacLaren (13 and under A), Brooke O'Brien (15 and under B) and Ally Williams (15 and under A). North Warrnambool Eagles up-and-coming netballer Annie Blackburn took out the 15 and under A competition's best and fairest award.

HAMPDEN Football Netball League Juniors 14 and under competition is tight, with only four points separating the top four sides. The ladder is Cobden (34 points, 396.92 per cent), Terang Mortlake (34, 243.90), Koroit (30, 147.36), Camperdown (30, 104.91), Emmanuel Hawks (20, 71.13), South Warrnambool (16, 65.11), North Warrnambool Eagles (16, 53.64), Warrnambool (12, 47.42) and Port Fairy (8, 51.97).
