Just above average apparently good enough

LIKE Warrnambool and District league best and fairest Sophie Cole, Hampden league best and fairest Kate Dobson didn't believe she had an outstanding season.

The Koroit mid-courter described it as "just above average''.

"I guess when you play in the centre you're always probably a chance because you're always in the play,'' she said. "It's like being an onballer in footy.''

The 30-year-old is hungry for her fifth senior premiership, which she can achieve tomorrow.

"It's going to be tough and we respect Warrnambool as an opponent,'' she said. "It's going to come down to match-ups.

"I think we proved (last Saturday) we can do anything.

"No one expected us to win without our two goalies but we did. It was huge.''

WHILE Warrnambool's Darcy Saunders has to sit on the sidelines for her 17 and under grand final tomorrow because she is in the Blues' senior grand final side, Laura Blackburn doesn't have to miss out.

Because North Warrnambool Eagles' senior team bowed out in the first semi-final to Terang Mortlake, Laura only has to worry about the 17 and under match tomorrow.

On Sunday the talented goaler was named the Hampden league 2009 rising star at the Maskell Medal presentation.

"I was pretty happy with my season,'' she said. "(In seniors) we won some that we were surprised with but then we lost some we should've won.

"I didn't expect to play as much as I did.''

The 17-year-old hasn't had much court-time in 17 and unders this season, something she doesn't expect to change tomorrow.

"I'll probably play somewhere between a half and three quarters,'' she said.

CONGRATULATI ONS to Cobden's Kerry McGlade, who received Hampden Football Netball League life membership after she racked up her 250th match this season.

The veteran's milestone slipped under the radar but she received the deserved recognition on Sunday. Not only is she a coach but also an umpire, former interleague representative and former team of the year member. Unfortunately the tag she would like most, she doesn't have - a senior premiership player.

A CROWD member at the Maskell Medal presentation followed in the same footsteps as a few people at the Logies this year.

Back in May, audience members at Australian TV's night of nights voiced their opinions of new hostess Gretel Killeen via Twitter while the ceremony was taking place. The same happened on Sunday, with at least one person getting on Facebook to proclaim he had enough of a certain speaker.

The presentation dragged on for longer than planned due to a computer glitch, which apparently was being fixed while the spectator slammed the speaker on Facebook.

WHILE the Warrnambool and District league team of the year received a few complaints via texts to The Standard, none have arrived in regards to the Hampden league team of the year.

That could be because the Hampden league wasn't brutal enough, instead naming a whopping six players on the bench.

Surely they could have made a few chops.

If not, change the name to squad of the year.
