Fashion crimes and finals build-up

YOU don't have to be a fashion expert to know that wearing pink and red together is a faux pas.

East Warrnambool netballers will commit that style crime tomorrow.

They don't care though, because it's all for a good cause.

The girls will wear their black bodysuits with the red strips but instead of their usual red bibs, they'll stick on hot pink ones.

Bombers delegate and senior player Andrea Austin said teams would also deck themselves out with pink ribbons, armbands, socks and more to assist with the club's cancer fund-raiser.

"Our coach Katie Burt lost a family member last year (to

cancer) which was pretty sad and a few others have been touched by it,'' she said.

"We've got the girls bringing a donation before their game.''

East takes on Russells Creek at Mack Oval tomorrow, with spectators at the round 18 match encouraged to pitch in for the fund-raiser.

SAMANTHA Holt was unable to claim the Victorian Netball League championship, with her side Boroondara Genesis going down to Hume City Falcons by three goals in the season decider.

Holt - a Warrnambool defender who hails from Portland originally - was quietly confident heading into Wednesday night's grand final against the minor premier.

It was an evenly-contested match, with the teams level on 32 at the last break.

Unfortunately for Holt, who played at goal defence, the Falcons broke away midway through the final term to set up victory.

HOLT has enjoyed coming back to the south-west to play with the Blues.

The defender said she would not make the trip down this weekend to play Port Fairy but would take to the court in the last two home-and-away rounds.

The pair of matches will be a sneak peek into the finals series, with third-ranked Warrnambool clashing against ladder-leader Koroit tomorrow and second-ranked Terang Mortlake in the final round.

Holt's presence will ensure the Blues build stability in the lead-up to finals, where they are looking to defend their premiership.

HAMPDEN league's finals could be set tomorrow afternoon.

If fifth-ranked North Warrnambool Eagles defeat sixth-ranked South Warrnambool, the top five will be set, although there is only 10 points between second and fifth.

WHILE the senior Western Region side is yet to be selected, the two juniors teams have been picked.

The 15 and under side includes Jocelyn McDonald, Elizabeth Steele, Angela Meade, Indi Morrison, Kelly Jones, Jodie Hayes, Brooke Price, Stephanie Baxter, Elli Chapman, Genevieve McLeod and Michaela Gleeson. The development

player is Brydie Harman. Chris Van Kempen will coach with Fran Bell her assistant.

The 17 and under side will be coached by Gaye Batt and includes Stephanie Jamieson, Jenny Walters, Maddison Smedts, Darcy Saunders, Laura Blackburn, Emily Ellen, Maddie Dalton, Anna Buzolich, Grace Butters, Jessica Lenehan and Stephanie

Townsend.

The teams will contest the State Netball Championships on October 3 and 4.
