English to get LOUD for championships

WARRNAMBOOL'S Lorraine English will lead the open Hampden Football Netball League (HFNL) side at the the 2010 Netball Victoria LOUD Championships. HFNL chief executive officer Stephen Soulsby announced the coaching appointments for the titles yesterday. Gill Herrmann, from South Warrnambool, will guide the 17 and under side while North Warrnambool Eagles' Dot Jenkins will take charge of the 15 and under team. The Eagles' Jackie Smedts is aiming for a hat-trick of titles as the coach of the 13 and under side. Clubs are asked to nominate potential players for the championships, with trainings to be held at Brauer College (May 3 and May 10) and Camperdown (May 20). The qualifying tournament for the championships will be held in Warrnambool on Sunday, May 23. The finals are on Sunday, June 20 at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Parkville.

WHO in Hampden League could best assist in the bid to curb the influence of towering shooter Narelle Welsh? The answer is (arguably) Gill Herrmann. The duo soaked up back-to-back Warrnambool and District League flags with Merrivale in 2007 and 2008, with the Tigers just falling short of a hat-trick. While Welsh crossed to Camperdown in the off-season after the 2009 grand final loss to East Warrnambool, her former Tigers coach Herrmann was appointed as South Warrnambool's 17 and under coach. The Roosters and Magpies clash tomorrow. It will be interesting to see whether Welsh will have the same impact as other games. The recruit is clearly Camperdown's go-to player in the goal circle. Incredibly she has shot 125 of the Magpies' 149 goals in the opening three rounds.

THIS is an offer which seems to be too good to be true, which is why Warrnambool and District Football Netball League (WDFNL) umpire co-ordinator Wilma Wallace is encouraging umpires to snap it up. South Rovers Football Netball Club is the venue for an upcoming mentor session and testing day. Wallace said that on May 20, Netball Victoria was holding a session which teaches experienced umpires how to become mentors while May 22 is the testing day. Netball Victoria's Anne Castles will co-ordinate the testing day, which sees umpires tested for their C grade badge while others can simply receive assessments. "There's no cost involved because Netball Victoria are putting it on for umpire development in the region," Wallace said. "It's a fantastic opportunity because we don't always have access to things like this." Interested umpires should contact the WDFNL.

DON'T let the name fool you. It's called coaches in the field but it's actually on the court. Timboon Demons is hosting a coaching session on Sunday at the Timboon Sports Centre. Demons general manager and A grade coach Leeanne Whitehead said it was the first time such a clinic would be held. A Netball Victoria representative will conduct two three-hour sessions. The first is on attacking in the goal circle, which is from 9.30am to 12.30pm, while defending in the goal circle is from 1pm to 4pm. "All local clubs in the area are welcome to attend, it's not just for us," Whitehead said. "We've got a few coming across from Warrnambool and Russells Creek."
