Chase The Sun - Chase The Sun

Chase The Sun - Chase The Sun

JUST 18 months after they got together Chase the Sun has presented a pretty impressive debut album featuring some captivating slide guitar and soulful vocals.

The Sydney-based trio of Jan Rynsaardt (guitar and vocals), Ryan Van Gennip (bass) and Jon "Howler" Howell (drums) will play at The Loft tonight, backed by Tom Richardson and The Black Water Fever.

Chase the Sun's self-titled album was born only days after they met and, fittingly for the band that hinges on its hillbilly finger-picking, it was recorded in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney.

Just how captivating you find Chase the Sun's soul-rich, rootsy ballads may depend on your mood at the time, but fortunately the sensitivity is interspersed with a some cranking, dirty blues riffs and rousing slide guitar.

The band lists blues legends Stevie Ray Vaughn, Johnny Winter and Walter Trout among their jam partners and guiding stars.

They have also shared the stage with John Butler, Jeff Lang and others both here and in the US.

The group bagged five nominations at the Australian Blues Awards last year, taking out the Best Group and Best Song awards for the album's first track, You Gotta Go.

They've also had air-play on Triple J, in-flight playlists, and toured extensively throughout the east-coast festival scene.

While Rynsaardt's vocals fit the bill, I was drawn to the vocal-free Instrumental for its frenetic guitar work.

There's a few under-a-star-lit-sky type love songs to follow and the slide-guitar of Great Mystery definitely puts it at the top of the heap.

But if you're after something more lively the slide-rich Catch the Rabbit, backed by some thumping bass and drum work, would make the harshest moonshine a joy to swallow.

Chase the Sun pride themselves on being able to win crowds over everywhere from beer barns to amphitheatres so their gig tonight could well be worth a look.
