IRISH DJ and composer David Holmes has long been inspired by movies and their soundtracks.
The ambient and atmospheric sounds of his first album, 1995's This Film's Crap Let's Slash The Seats, impressed some influential Hollywood directors.
He has since scored Steven Soderbergh's Out Of Sight and Ocean's trilogy among more than a dozen top studio films.
For his first solo album in eight years, Holmes turns the spotlight on his own life, with his childhood in Belfast and his family featuring heavily.
Dedicating The Holy Pictures to his late parents - his father died in 2007 - after becoming a father himself, the album carries an emotional burden unseen in his previous work.
The personal nature of the tracks impels Holmes to handle vocals for the first time.
The 10-track album maintains a cohesive flow of many touchstones.
Steering away from his most popular breakbeat grooves, these include the swirling, dub-laden guitar pop of Jesus and Mary Chain and Primal Scream and the motorik 4/4 beats of Krautrock.
The up-tempo tunes are counterbalanced by minimalist electronica instrumentals, where mellotron and piano-led ballads are swathed in synths.
There are still some collaborations, with Suicide's Martin Rev co-writing the propulsive opener I Heard Wonders.
If you like Krautrock or Primal Scream's electronic forays, such as XTRMNTR or Evil Heat, then there is much here for you to enjoy in this intimate, challenging and enjoyable record.
