Recent failures of the carbon pollution reduction scheme, the Copenhagen climate change summit and the insulation program are taking their toll on even the most determined of us to think positively about national and international environmental initiatives.
So are we losing momentum? Definitely not.
In the background, under the radar of the media, there are movements happening locally and even internationally to develop renewable energy technologies and markets to deal with a carbon-constrained future. I have recently heard the Chinese have plans to establish enough wind farms by mid century to supply the equivalent power used by Australia. India, too, is starting to pursue carbon targets of its own.
We don't have to wait for international or national action to do our bit for the environment. In Warrnambool there are some great local initiatives already happening. I will be busy this Sunday for Clean Up Warrnambool as part of the Clean up Australia Day. Schools Clean up Day is Friday.
There are 21 sites you can register to clean up across the city. Email mmurfett@warrnambool.vic.gov.au to register for a local site near you or simply rock on up to Viaduct Road near the Breakwater or Levys carpark at 10am Sunday to clean up this place.
There is a real sense of satisfaction by getting involved with Clean Up Warrnambool. Let's see if we can get our biggest turnout yet.
Another great initiative is the Green Business Lean Business workshops. If you want to know more about how you can save money by incorporating more sustainable and environmentally-aware practices into your business, then this is the workshop for you. This intensive program will enable you to:
* Save money through reducing your lighting, cooling and heating bills.
* Conserve water through reducing, repairing, re-using and retrofitting.
* Reduce your waste products and transport costs.
* Incorporate what you learn into your business and business goals.
The Green Business Lean Business Workshop will be on tonight from 6pm until 8pm at the Warrnambool City Council reception room. There are still a few places left so get in quick.
The program is priced at $20 per person.
