Insulating savings

There has been a rumour the Mayor beat me in the Undie 500 at Wunta. This is partly true, but even I know there are some people you should let beat you to sustain your job.

This week I have been using my super hearing powers to find out the most concerning environmental issues to people in the 'Bool. I have heard many questions about how to save energy and concerns about businesses door knocking people’s homes offering to install insulation.

Well, it just so happens that February is energy reduction month and installing insulation in the home is one of the most cost effective ways to save greenhouse gases and save the planet. You can save up to 40 per cent in heating and cooling costs simply by installing insulation. And now with the Federal Government’s Home Insulation Program it is easier than ever.

The Home Insulation Program offers up to $1200 to households to install ceiling insulation. People that own their home, landlords and even tenants may all be eligible for the program. There are no excuses to getting your ceiling insulated.

There are many businesses in the area registered to install insulation. Here are some simple tips if businesses come knocking on your door or if you ring local businesses:

* Check to see the business is a registered insulation installer via the web or hotline (www.environment.gov.au or 1800 808 571),

* You must get two independent quotes from two registered installers and hang on to the paper work should an inspector come to your property,

* If you are renting, make sure you get approval from the home owner,

* Houses that have been granted assistance under the Australian Government’s Solar Hot Water Program since February 3, 2009 are not eligible,

* Pick up the Home Insulation Program Guidelines at the Smart Living Library Stand at the Warrnambool Library at 25 Liebig Street,

* There are more things to consider to ensure you are eligible to receive assistance. Ring the hotline or visit the website for more information (details above).

This month people can learn about energy reduction at the first of our Smart Living Workshops. The first workshop is called Energy Reduction-Summer Cooling and will have two guest speakers discussing the Federal Government's Green Loans program and providing details of an eight star energy efficient house that has been built in Portland. There will also be some great giveaways, so come along to:

* The Dinning Room of the Archie Graham Community Centre at 118 Timor Street, Warrnambool on Wednesday February 17 at 7.30pm. Registrations are essential. Contact Simone O'Sullivan on 5559 4847 or email sjosullivan@warrnambool.vic.gov.a u.

And don’t forget to make your day a SUSTAIN THE BOOL day!
