THIS Saturday (June 5) is World Environment Day, a day that promotes awareness of the environment across the globe.
The world is a pretty big place, even for me and I have superpowers and fly with a cape so you mere mortals must have trouble imagining things on a global scale.
So I reckon the best thing for us to do is think about how we can all do something little around our own homes.
If everyone all over the world does something little, the whole world will be a better place.
So you can help improve our world just by making a small change in your little ol' shack in The Bool.
Let's take a moment to think about it - for the world to keep ticking along nicely we need to use our natural resources without damaging them.
We must protect our air, water, forests, wildlife, farmland and seas. Seems logical right?
But to have our fancy lifestyles with big warm homes, gas guzzling cars and garbage disposal, we get a bit careless and destroy parts of our environment.
This year the theme for World Environment Day is "Many Species. One Planet. One Future."
It promotes the need to protect and conserve the diversity of life.
One way you can do that is to join Warrnambool's 10 in 10 Challenge.
This challenge is being co-ordinated by our very own South West Sustainability Partnership which aims to establish a culture of sustainability through management of the environmental, economic, social, cultural and heritage resources in the South West.
To complete the challenge all you have to do is commit to reducing your water, electricity, gas or fuel by 10 per cent during 2010.
You can choose one of the categories or all four if you are super keen.
The challenge is open to business, schools or households.
By signing up to the challenge you will be helping make our city a better place to live - and the world a whole lot healthier. That's pretty cool.
All you have to do is choose an electricity, gas, water or petrol bill covering at least 3 months and commit to reducing your use of one or more of these fuels by at least 10 per cent over the same period in the next 12 months.
Simple. And you will save money. It's win-win.
You can sign up for the challenge by visiting www.swsp.org.au
We can think global, but act local to make a big difference to the future of our natural resources.
I want to make sure Captain Sustain the Bool junior can suck in fresh clean air while he is crusading around town, so join me and help make a difference.
