Like all superheros I too have my own weaknesses and super powers. I must tell you that it is true that coal is my kryptonite.
Victoria’s reliance on coal-based electricity makes us one of the highest greenhouse gas emitters per capita in the world.
As one of the biggest emitters it is crucial we band together to make energy savings around the home, work and schools to save greenhouse emissions and set an example to the world.
There are, of course, big financial savings to reducing your energy use with recent reports of an increase in power costs by 400 per cent in four years.
My super powers involve the use of words and telepathy to spread environmental messages.
My powers get stronger from the aura created by more and more people getting involved in environmental activities. So join in me in my crusade to reduce power.
My weapon of choice is not a “light sabre” but a “light saver,” a whirly, twirly compact fluorescent which saves energy and saves those nasty greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere.
You too can install compact fluorescent lamps. They last about eight times longer and use 80 per cent less energy when compared to normal globes.
You could save $60 in energy costs over the life of the globe. You must make sure you dispose of compact fluorescents properly when they run out, otherwise my powers will be weakened.
Compact fluoros contain mercury, so take them to Dennis Napthine’s office in Liebig Street or Moonlight Lighting Fairy Street where they will be disposed of correctly and we will prevent mercury leaching into landfill areas.
There is a small cost at Moonlight Lighting while Dennis Napthine’s office will take them for free.
February is SUSTAIN the BOOL energy reduction month so I am going to give you some simple tips on making savings on household appliances which account for 61 per cent of a typical Victorian’s household greenhouse gas emissions.
* Save 20 per cent on the lifetime running costs of a fridge and buy at least a four-star fridge.
* Regularly clean the coils at the back of the fridge.
* Leave room behind the fridge to allow air to flow freely.
* Cut 25 per cent off your running costs on a washing machine with every extra star.
* Switch to cold wash and cut running costs by 80-90 per cent.
* Wear your undies four times before washing, front side, back side, inside out front side and inside out backside, though this doesn’t worry me as much when my undies are on the outside!
This year I will need your help to plant 15,000 trees in our city.
You can learn more about sustainability through the Smart Living community forums.
The next forum begins at 7pm tomorrow at Southern Way, 181 Fairy Street.
Come along and together we can come up with ways to make Warrnambool a more sustainable place to live.
