Detox is all the rage

DETOX is all the rage at the moment. According to Wikipedia, detox is the removal of toxic substances from a living organism.

People spend hundreds of dollars to cleanse their bodies, particularly their colon, of harmful substances.

While the benefits of detoxing the body are widely debated, surely no one could argue that if your home and your city underwent a detox to remove pollutants, they would be better places to live.

And you don't have to spend any money in the process.

Let's start with cleansing you home during Detox Your Home day on Saturday. Detox your home is a free household disposal service.

Think about all of those dangerous and unwanted products sitting around your home within reach of the kids or pets.

Councils and Sustainability Victoria have teamed up to organise the service to rid your home of dangerous chemicals. So what will they accept? Kitchen and bathroom cleaners, floor care products, car and general batteries, fuels, barbecue gas cylinders, paints and paint stripper, pool chemicals, fertilisers and much more.

Visit resourecesmart.vic.gov.au or ring the free number 1800 353 233 for the complete list of products that you can rid from your home.

Detox Your Home is Saturday, March 13, from 8am to 4pm at the livestock exchange (saleyards), Caramut Road, Warrnambool.

So now to the bigger picture - detoxing our city. Why do we need to?

Try to think of Warrnambool as a living organism where its kidneys and arteries are in fact its wetlands, rivers and ocean.

Now imagine the many pollutants that enter those kidneys and arteries through stormwater from our streets.

Stormwater is water run-off which is carried to the nearest waterway.

It carries pollutants in the process, including dog poo, litter, cigarette butts and oils just to name a few things that lay on our streets.

We have all probably seen the floating bags in Lady Bay or the cigarette butts on McGennan's beach as a result, but the dog poo, oils and other chemicals which mix in with the water are harder to see.

So where do we start?

Do my detox program. It's easy and free.

The Captain's detox recipe

* 1 cup of detox your home this Saturday.

* 4 tablespoons of pick up after your dog.

* ΒΌ cup of bin your butts and rubbish.

* 2 cups of take pride in your city.

Show a bit of pride in the city and do the Captain's detox.

The result will be clean kidneys and arteries for Warrnambool.

So why don't you make this Saturday a detox day, and then test out my detox recipe to keep our homes and city healthy.
